MADFA SACCO entered into partnership with UAP to facilitate its members to access crop insurance services under the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS). The crops insured under this facility include Maize, Rice, Beans, sunflower, and soya bean.  The perils insured include excessive rainfall, drought, hail damage, windstorm, flooding, frost damage, fire, and uncontrollable pests and diseases.

The facility uses the weather index insurance which monitors crop water availability to determine drought and has a linear correlation with crop yield. It is therefore a much more suitable indicator of agricultural drought than rainfall. The index is selected to represent, as closely as possible, the crop yield loss likely to be experienced by the farmer.  The Government of Uganda through the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS) subsidizes the premium payable by smallholder farmers by 50%.
